The Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre is housed in a beautiful old library building at the end of the main street - Murphy Street. During our first visit to town we were towing our caravan and found a parking spot just around the corner - this is the bus stop for the local school but available for caravan parking during school hours - very convenient and a great idea to utilise this space for visitors.
Lovely rooms inside the VIC with great information as well as local products for sale - we found the staff friendly and helpful and enthusiastic about things to see in the area. One of the rooms within the Centre houses a display of local artworks which is constantly changing. The art on display during our visit was quite fascinating – objects and pictures created out of various printed paper (maps, periodic tables etc) that were amazing.
Apparently there is an activity where you can bus to Beechworth with your bike and then ride downhill back to Wangaratta. Most of this path is along the railway line (rail trail) and in very good condition - this sounds like great fun and something to keep in mind for our next visit.
Wangaratta is located just two and a half hours north of Melbourne along the Hume Freeway and also has daily rail services between Melbourne and Sydney stopping at the Wangaratta station.
We visited Wangaratta again recently and once again headed to the visitor information centre. They now have a very large monitor on the wall where they call display maps or local information. We found this very useful when obtaining directions from the staff. The Wangaratta VIC was within walking distance to our caravan at the Painters Island Caravan Park (the closest to town). There are lots of cafes and restaurants close by and some very interesting bike/walking tracks to explore.
