While staying at the BIG4 Bendigo Marong Holiday Park we were advised to try a meal at the Marong Family Hotel about 500 metres walk down the Calder Highway. There are no designated walking paths so I advise you to take a torch in case you head back to the caravan park after dark.
The Marong Family Hotel or mfh is a lovely old building on the corner of the highway and Marong-Serpentine Road. I understand the original Hotel was built in 1865 and was burnt down in early 1917. It was rebuilt later that year and well worth a visit to taste one of their signature dishes - lamb from a property the hotel’s owners have nearby called Connor Park.
So of course we had to try lamb – Mediterranean Lamb Rump and Lamb souvlaki. Both were delicious. Of course they have a range of other food including schnitzels, hamburgers and pizza. The meals are very generous and we probably did not need the Mustard Bread but is was great.
These are no ordinary pub meals and we enjoyed lovely service in a nice surrounding. The Marong Family Hotel is open seven days a week (closed Christmas day).
