During our stay at WIlpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges we decided to set off on the walk to Wangara lookout - about 8 kilometres return from the Resort. Relatively easy to the Hill Homestead along a well defined track and then 600 metres climbing up 100 metres to the top lookout. Wangara Lookout allows great views inside Wilpena Pound and which will give you a good idea of how special this formation actually is.
I believe it is called a Pound because it reminded early settlers of a pound where you can keep animals. There is only one valley leading into the pound so it was relatively easy to block off and keep farm animals within the high walls of Wilpena Pound.
You can catch the shuttle bus part of the way along the sealed tracak and this will reduce your walk by about 4 kilometres - great when travelling with small children. There are several other walks around areas of Wilpena Pound and maps are available from the reception showing the distance of each one and their difficulty.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife hiding in the bushes along the track - we saw, kangaroos, a huge echidna shuffling through the undergrowth and plenty of lizards warming themselves on the rocks. There is plenty of shade along the Wangara Walk and the Hills Homstead at the base of the climb up to the lookout has public toilets and a number of picnic tables.
