Malanda

Description

Malanda is a medium-sized town on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is located 85 kilometres (53 mi) from Cairns and 732 metres (2,402 ft) above sea level. Malanda first developed in the 1900s after the discovery of tin and copper at Herberton saw a steady stream of miners and engineers moving over the mountains from the coast. At the 2006 census, Malanda had a population of 1,009.

Malanda is a small town on the Atherton Tableland, not far from Cairns. We stayed here for several days at the Malanda Falls Caravan Park - a short walk to the Visitor Information Centre and and not far from the centre of town. The Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo is found in this area which is the smaller of Australia’s two tree-kangaroos.

Some of the things we did during our stay in Malanda:

Malanda Hotel - Built from the timber of local trees and is reputed to be the largest timber hotel in Australia - great food.
Malanda Dairy Centre - an old fashioned Milk bar displaying a history of dairy farming in the area - houses a photography and art gallery by local artists
Dairy Farmers Milk Factory - joined a tour to see the process.
Narada Tea Plantation - about 9 kilometres out of town. Tea is actually a plant from the Camellia family. We had scones, jam and cream with a pot of Nerada Tea – this was worth the trip alone.
Malanda Baker - sausage roll with mashed potato and peas - Yum
Visitor’s information Centre - Rainforest Walk and Tulip Oak walk. Try to spot the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos that live in this area.
Malanda Falls (within walking distance of the Visitor Information Centre) - Platypus have been spotted at the Malanda Falls.
Gallo Dairyland – a family farm making award winning cheese. They also make chocolate and you can try before you buy. We purchased plenty of cheese, of course chocolate, and some lactose free ginger yoghurt - beautiful.

Take a walk around town to view the Malanda Mosaics that depict the rich history of the area. This area has a high average rainfall and there are a number of waterfalls that we did not get time to see - we will head back soon.
