Muswellbrook is a town in the Upper Hunter region of NSW surrounded by a wineries, horse studs and close to coal mines. There is a range of accommodation here, including motels, farm stays and country cottages. We stayed in the Riverside Cabin and Van Park located on Mills Street - small and old but very friendly staff and walking distance to town.
If you enjoy history this is a great place to visit with the Muswellbrook Heritage Walk taking you past buildings dating back to the mid-1800s. Some of these beautiful buildings can be found on the main street through town. We enjoyed a lovely morning stroll through the centre of town.
There are a couple of National Parks near Muswellbrook including including Wollemi National Park (home of the prehistoric Wollemi Pine) and Barrington Tops where I understand they have a successful Tasmanian Devil breeding programme underway.
There are a number of old pubs in town for a drink with the locals and we chose to eat at the Muswellbrook and District Workers Club - courtesy bus, lovely meals and a cinema on site.
One highlight of our visit to Muswellbrook was to call into the Hunter Belle Cheese Factory on the outskirts of town as you head towards Scone. Well worth a visit to watch the cheese makers in action, taste lovely local cheese, enjoy coffee, morning tea or lunch in the beautiful indoor or outdoor dining areas, and enjoy looking at the interesting gifts for sale. We did come away with a selection of interesting cheeses. Plenty of parking - even when towing a caravan.
