Much of the Western Australia's seafood comes from waters off Carnarvon with a thriving prawn, scallop, crab and fishing industry. During the season, freshly caught seafood can be purchased directly from outlets around town.
Carnarvon is also surrounded by over 1,000 hectares of plantations growing a range of fresh produce like bananas, mangoes, grapes, tropical fruit, strawberries, melons, avocados, tomatoes, beans, corn, pumpkin etc - not to mention beef and lamb. Many of these plantations also make jams, ice creams, dried fruit and pickles - ice cream from Bumbak's was delicious.
The Gascoyne Food Trail has been created to encourage people to visit these producers and purchase beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables direct from the grower. The food trail also highlights outlets that use local produce in their menus. Grap a map on the Gascoyne Food Trail form the Carnarvon Visitor Information Centre
Gascoyne Growers Markets is held every Saturday morning from May to October, run by the growers themselves with stalls selling a range of fresh produce (often picked the night before). These markets are plastic bag free so make sure you take a reusable bag with you. There are also stall that sell locally made crafts, coffee, cakes and local seafood etc.
I think the Gascoyne Food Trail is a great idea to encourage visitors to support local industry and buy beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables direct from our Australian Farmers - I know we left with a fridge full.
