Gunbower is a small country town in Victoria located on the Murray Valley Highway between Cohuna and Echuca. It is known for is proximity to Gunbower Island - Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary.
This island was formed by the Murray River and Gunbower Creek and has protected wildlife (kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes) and 160 different species of birds. Gunbower Island is a great location for camping, canoeing, fishing, bush walking and, of course, bird-watching. The town of Gunbower has a small population of about 550 with a country pub, serving good meals, and a caravan park within walking distance to town. There are several small shops in town and a very relaxing place to spend a few days.
