The Visitor Information Centre in Woomera houses a great museum about the development of the town and the rocket range plus historical displays of the Joint Defence Facility at Nurrungar. As all Australians know this was a very important base for rocket testing and the area was surveyed by Len Beadell. There are great displays of some of the equipment used by Len Beadell during the many years he spent surveying outback Australia. We have several of his books on audio tape and it was interesting to listen to these as we approached Woomera. Len Beadell's ashes are held at the Woomera Cemetery.
Also housed in the building is a cafe and the Visitor Information Centre has a range of maps and souvenirs as well as providing a tour booking service. A fee is payable to enter the rocket museum - this was only $6 during our visit and very worthwhile. Along the street from the Visitor Information Centre is an outdoor display of rockets and planes used during the development of Woomera.
