Port Vincent is a small town on the eastern side of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The Port Vincent Northern Walking Trail is in two sections - trail number 1 is about 2 kilometres return, and trail number 2 is approximately 5 kilometres return. We incorporated parts of both trails during our bike ride from Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park.
We decided to ride our bikes along the foreshore, past the marina and then up onto cliffs overlooking the ocean. The Northern Trail No. 2 begins at the Marina car park and heads north along the shore line. If you look down to the beach you will see "The Erratics" which are large granite boulders believed to have been deposited during the ice age.
We had to push our bikes up the stairs to the top of the cliffs and then headed north along the track to towards the golf course before turning around and following this trail back towards Port Vincent Lookout above the Marina. There are seats provided along the track to stop and rest while enjoying great views of the ocean. We continued along the cliff top towards the residential area and back down to Marine Parade for lunch. After a long bike ride we treated ourselves to fish and chips from the Port Vincent Deli and Takeaway on the corner of Marine Parade and Main Road - the crumbed King George Whiting was delicious.
If you are walking the Northern Trail then you can head along the Alan Powell Walking Trail and check out the historic Pioneer well site (we did not think this was suitable for bike riding). The walking trails are a great way to explore the area while getting a bit of exercise - a win win.
