Murray Bridge is a large town on the Murray River in South Australia - about 80 kilometres from Adelaide along the South Eastern Freeway and then onto the Old Princes Highway. Of course there is a bridge over the river at Murray Bridge and it is quite a commercial centre.
We called into the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) on South Terrace which is off the main drag but a large centre with plenty of information about the area. The VIC also has a large range of locally make products - a great place to pick up a gift from the surrounding area.
We headed down to Sturt Reserve on the banks of the Murray River for lunch. Several old train carriages sit beside an old paddle steamer wharf and there are a number of sporting facilities – large tennis complex, boating and fishing. Further along the reserve is a large picnic area with tables and plenty of shade, a public toilet and large children’s playground.
There are three caravan parks in town:
There are a number of other accommodation options and the region attracts about one million visitors each year. Attractions include water sports, boating, fishing, swimming, motor sports, recreation, walking trails, restaurants, the Murray Bridge canoe trail and an International pedal race. Many visitors choose to hire a houseboat to explore the river - there are a number of places at Murray Bridge to moor for a quick stop.
