Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is found in Townsville's CBD on Flinders Street - not far from the Magnetic Island ferry terminal. There seems to be plenty of parking close by and we rode our bikes from Rowes Bay along The Strand to the aquarium. This part of Townsville, also includes the Museum of Tropical Queensland and The Cultural Centre so you can visit all on the same day.
This is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium and you see thousands of charismatic marine creatures showcasing amazing features of the Great Barrier Reef. The Aquarium was built to make the reef accessible and spread the conservation message in order to help protect the 'real thing'.
As well as a range of marine creatures the Aquarium has the Waterview Cafe (open from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm daily), and a souvenir store (open from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm daily) selling a range of interesting gifts. Visitors in wheelchairs have full access to all exhibits.
Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is a great way to learn about this amazing Australian natural wonder.
